Ponceau 4R is a sulfonated azo dye used to give foods and beverages a red color (E124). It is used as a colorant in alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks, bakery products, confectionery and canned fruits. It is approved in Europe, Asia and Australia; its use in food is not permitted in the USA.
