Reducing sulfite salt used as a dechlorinating agent in water treatment and as a bleaching auxiliary in textiles.
Sodium metabisulfite is a sulfite salt with strong reducing and antimicrobial properties. It is used as a dechlorinating agent after disinfection in water treatment, as a reducing agent in textile and leather bleaching and as an oxidation inhibitor in industrial processes. In a humid environment it may release sulfur dioxide gas.
