Reducing sulfite salt used as a food preservative, bleaching agent and dechlorinating agent in water treatment.
Sodium metabisulfite is a sulfite salt with strong reducing and antimicrobial properties. It is used as a preservative (E223) in the food and beverage industry, as an oxidation inhibitor in winemaking, as a dechlorinating agent after disinfection in water treatment and as a bleaching auxiliary in textiles. In a humid environment it may release sulfur dioxide gas. It is offered in technical and food grades.
