Tartrazine is a synthetic food dye of the azo group. It is used to impart a bright lemon-yellow color in beverages, confectionery, sauces, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. It is approved in the EU under the code E102. Because it is one of the colorants associated with hyperactivity in children, the labels of some products containing this dye must carry a warning.
