Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 is a colorless, viscous liquid at room temperature, consisting of a mixture of polymers of different chain lengths made up of ethylene oxide units. It is used as a solvent and humectant in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, as a softening auxiliary in textiles and as a carrier and solvent in industrial processes. It generally has low toxicity and is not classified under GHS.
