Isothiazolinone-based preservative/biocide mixture used in industrial water systems and formulations.
CIT/MIT (CMIT/MIT) is an aqueous mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT) and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT) in a ratio of approximately 3:1. It is used as a preservative in industrial water treatment, paints, adhesives and, at low concentrations, rinse-off cosmetic/personal care products, in order to prevent microbial growth (bacteria, fungi, algae) in water-based systems. It is a corrosive substance that can cause allergic skin reactions (sensitization) and is very toxic to aquatic life.
