Anionic surfactant used in shampoos, liquid soaps and detergents as a cleansing and foaming agent.
Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES, sodium laureth sulfate) is an anionic surfactant obtained by ethoxylating C12-14 fatty alcohol of coconut or palm origin and then sulfating it. It is a paste-like aqueous product containing 70% active matter and is used as a cleansing, foaming and emulsifying agent in shampoo, shower gel, liquid soap, dishwashing and laundry detergent formulations. It can cause serious eye damage and skin irritation, and is harmful to the aquatic environment in the long term.
